Amnesty International is marking the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights with Small Places events. Musicians in 45 countries will gather in small neighbourhood venues to informally join in the celebration. Oakville Amnesty International members say they are particularly happy this Thanksgiving weekend because Daw Aung San Suu Kyii, a prisoner of conscience in Burma, on whose behalf they have campaigned, has been released from prison. Everyone is invited to join poets and musicians on Oct. 12 at the Moonshine Café, 137 Kerr St. from 2 until 8 p.m. in a celebra- tion of the work that Amnesty International does all over the world. There will be no speeches, just music by Akemi Liyange, The Millers, John Marlatt, Frankie Vomit, Eric Apadoo, David McLachlan and poetry by Ellen Jaffe, Andreas Gripp, Elka Ruth Enola, Josie Di Sciascio-Andrews, Carl Oresk, Clark Lapointe, Dave Toms, Katie Armstrong, Saskia Maddock and Cheryl Xavier. Admission and parking are free. Stay for the whole time or drop in for as long as you can. Bring your friends and family. Five musicians from Oakville and surrounding area will perform Dvorak's passionate String Quintet in G Major, Op. 77. The work is a mixture of traditional writing in the first movement, an energetic Bohemian Scherzo, subdued sections, contrasting rhythms and moods, delicate interplay between the instruments, gentle, lyrical and meditative passages. The program is completed by Boccherini's most famous work: his Quintet in E Major. As soon as you hear the minuet you will be transported into a world of sublime elegance and refinement. Single tickets cost $25 for adults, $15 for students and seniors and $5 for youths 15 and under. Subscriptions for all five concerts cost $100 for adults, $60 for students and seniors and $20 for youths 15 and under. Mini subscriptions to three concerts cost $65 for adults, $40 for students and seniors and $12 for youths 15 and under. The ensemble is offering a buy two, get three subscription program. This means when you buy two identical subscriptions or mini-subscriptions, you obtain a third identical one for free.
