www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday October 10, 2008 - 3 Why should you be elected? As part of its election coverage, The Oakville Beaver has asked each of the candidates in the Oakville and Halton ridings to respond to a weekly question. For their final question we asked them : Why should you be elected to represent the voters of Oakville? Bonnie Brown -- Liberals In today's climate of economic uncertainty, who do you want in charge of our nation's finances? The Mulroney Conservative government left Canada with a $42billion an- Bonnie Brown nual deficit. It was a Liberal government together with Canadians who bought the nation's financial affairs back under control. Our prudent fiscal management led to a string of budget surpluses and enabled tax cuts for all Canadians. The Liberal government left a surplus of $12 billion which has disappeared in just two years. Now we find ourselves on the brink of deficit just as the economy is deteriorating and Canadians may need their government as never before. The Liberal party has the record, the experience and the Team to deal with today's complex, global economy. The Liberals also have the courage and the Plan to bring the environment and the economy together. On Oct. 7th the Liberal Plan was strongly endorsed by 120 leading scientists and 230 leading economists as the right approach to fight climate change while moving our economy into the 21st century. Our Plan includes serious tax cuts to offset rising energy costs. On Oct. 14th vote for experience, integrity, the Liberal Team and the Liberal Plan. In Oakville vote for Bonnie Brown. Terence Young Conservatives Oakville deserves an MP who can be counted on to take action for a stronger economy: balanced budgets, lower taxes and controlled spending. As MPP for north Oakville, Terence Young I had a reputation as an active representative. I secured more than $5 million in funding for Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital's (OTMH) new outpatient department; a new kidney dialysis centre for OTMH; $12 million for Sheridan College's Animation and Emerging Technologies Centre; and the money to build 470 new long term care beds in three new facilities. On Oct.14, give me the opportunity to do this at the federal level. As your MP, I'll work within the government caucus on: · Income splitting for those who stay home to care for disabled family members. · Allowing those who are self employed to opt into the Employment Insurance program and take parental leave. · Establishing a Children's Arts Tax Credit to encourage greater participation in arts activities. · Making student loans available to part-time students (with no interest while in school). · Helping first time home buyers manage the cost by offering a tax credit of $5,000. · Tax free savings accounts, which will allow every Canadian to save money for the future. · Investing $1.4 billion into affordable housing, and $270 million to combat homelessness. You can count on me to represent Oakville in parliament and have your voice heard in Ottawa. Blake Poland Green Party Don't let anyone tell you that greening the economy can't be done. Other countries are already way ahead of us, and reaping the benefits. The 86 windmills being installed Blake Poland on Wolfe Island near Kingston were made in Denmark. They could have been made here in Ontario. An economy that works with, not against, the environment is, in the long run, a stronger economy and healthier society. It's called sustainable development, and its time has come. As Health Promotion Critic for the Green Party of Canada, member of Elizabeth May's inner Shadow Cabinet, professor of public health at the University of Toronto, and active member of the local community, more and more people believe that I am the right candidate for Oakville, with the best ideas and the best platform. We have an outstanding platform, a principled and integrated approach that is fiscally prudent, socially progressive and environmentally responsible. Not pie in sky, not risky, but fully costed and do-able Our 120 page Vision Green policy platform addresses all the major federal election issues. A Green Vote is a vote that matters. 665,000 Canadians voted Green in the last federal election. It didn't translate into seats that time around, but look at the influence we've already had. Imagine what we can do this time around. Most Canadians agree we need a Green voice in parliament. Vote for what you believe in. Send a message of hope to Ottawa. Vote Green on October 14. Elect Blake Poland. Michelle Bilek NDP I love Canada and I want to help build a future of hope and opportunity for you, your family, and your nation. I am proud to represent the party that believes the e c o n o m y Michelle Bilek should serve the people's interests rather than people being forced to serve economic interests. Recent governments are not serving the interests of most Canadians. It's time to choose a new direction for Canada! I believe that effective action to address the environmental crisis is the most pressing issue in this election. We need to clean up the mess that others have left behind. New Democrats have an environmental plan that will work. I am ashamed that Canada has become a partner with American aggression. New Democrats will establish Canada as an independent voice for global peace and disarmament. Recent governments have sat back while Canadian children have gone cold and hungry. Poverty in Canada is unnecessary. Child poverty and poverty among First Nations peoples is an utter disgrace! New Democrats will act to eliminate poverty in Canada. In this election you can vote for a future where your needs are protected; and you can vote to protect the environment and to protect your nation. The New Democrats and I envision a future of hope and opportunity for you, your family, and your nation; and New Democrats have a solid plan to make this vision a reality. DON'T PAY RETAIL!
