22 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday October 11, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Taking Steps for the women you know with breast cancer Registration for Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer 2008 is open and ready for this year's participants to pledge their support. Lace up and join the Canadian Cancer Society Oakville Unit in partnership with The Oakville Beaver and Wave 94.7 for the 2008 event at Oakville Place Mall on Sunday, Oct. 26. Participants will again have a chance to walk the indoor track as they show their support in the fight against breast cancer. People of all ages and fitness levels will enjoy the leisurely 5km mall walk. Families not yet ready for the full 5km, have the chance to enjoy an easier 1km Family Fun Walk. Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer is the only fundraising walk in Oakville that raises money in support of breast cancer. Since its inception in 2006, it has seen more than 400 participants walk more than 2,000 km and raise $39,000 towards vital breast cancer research and support services funded by the Canadian Cancer Society. "It's a great family-friendly event. People of all ages and fitness levels can participate, and taking part does not require a huge time commitment," said Lisa Moffatt, fundraising co-ordinator of the Oakville Unit. Participants can register at www.cancer.ca/takingsteps and create their own personalized fundraising page, share their inspiration for walking and invite pledges. Or, register in person at the Oakville Unit office at 635 Fourth Line, Unit 51 Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or by calling 905- 845-5231. Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer is pledge-based so there is no registration fee. "This is my first year participating. I have created my own fundraising page to invite my family and all my girlfriends," said Katy Gruszewski, a high school co-op student at the Oakville Unit. Adults who raise a minimum $100 and kids under 14 who raise a minimum of $30 will receive the new Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer shirt. This year, an estimated 22,400 women across Canada will be diagnosed with breast cancer -- the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Canadian women. Breast cancer is the second most common cause of death in women -- this year an estimated 5,300 Canadian women will die from it -- women who are our mothers, daughters, sisters, friends and colleagues.
