The Town has switched off its two foghorns, located at Bronte and Oakville piers, citing potentially dangerous mechanical issues. The submerged cable, which powered the foghorn at the Bronte pier, had been sending electrical shorts into the water, noted Chris Mark, director of Parks and Open Space. He also pointed out that while not submerged the cable that powers the foghorn at the Oakville pier was in bad shape and also needs to be replaced. Mark said warnings about the age-old guidance system's demise have been sent out to mariners, however, not everyone seems to be getting the message. K e r r V i l l a g e . c a On Monday, Oct. 13, many mariners boating off the Oakville pier suddenly found themselves in a difficult situation when a beautiful day gave way to thick banks of fog, which rolled in from the east. One mariner said the situation was only resolved when a boat took up a position at the end of the pier and sounded its horn every three minutes. The boat repeated this practice for three hours to help guide boaters back to port. The job of repairing the foghorns had been the responsibility of the coast guard, but the task has now been handed off to the municipalities. Mark said, the matter of fixing the foghorns would be coming before the Community Services Committee "in the near future." An exact date was not provided, however Mark told The Oakville Beaver that preliminary estimates for repairing the foghorns was approximately $400,000. The Town will weigh its various options. The thick fog that rolled into Oakville Harbor recently sent off local warning bells about the state of the foghorns at the town's two harbours. o n Ke r r S t .
