SPORTSBRIEFS Oakville posted wins over the Hamilton Reps, Toronto Ice Dogs and Flamborough Sabres on its way to the championship. The injury-depleted Rangers recruited two alternate players, Blake Stewart and John Carney, for the tournament. Regular members of the team are Michael Cookish, Bradley Bezemer, Kyle McLaren, Matt Simonot, Kyle Hallman, Aidan Challis, Sean Keating, Brian Keatings, Robert Hudson, Sean Courage, Adam Goraieb, Jordan Boulding, Mitch Dennis, Zack Stamegna, Nick Greco, Brandon Wood and Liam Risi. Brian Stamegna, Brian Wood and Todd Courage coach the team, Rob Cookish is the trainer and Cort Challis is the manager. Sputore was sharp early in the game, stopping a breakaway while the game was still scoreless, and earned the shutout. Hound Dogs win gold With all of their games decided by one goal, the Oakville minor peewee house league Hound Dogs earned gold at the recent Weekend Hockey TNT tournament. Oakville defeated Meadowvale 10, lost 2-1 to Port Credit and downed the Oakville Integra Capital Pirates 2-1 in the opening round. The Hound Dogs then avenged their loss to Port Credit with a 1-0 win over the Storm in the final game. Matthew Reesor scored the only goal in the final, assisted by Patrick Gamble and Luke DiBenedetto. Griffin Wallace-Higgs earned the shutout, his second of the tournament. Cameron Elliott (two), Graham Wigley and Keven Mastri had Oakville's other goals in the tournament. Also contributing were Bradley Wood, Logan Townsend, Michael Sutton, Jonathon Bacic, Matthew Kozdras, Tyler McCluskey, Samuel Newby, Alex Capstick and Anthony Bruno. On top of compiling a 12-2-3 record in league play, the Rangers have also raised money for charitable causes. The team recently organized a car wash in support of children's charity Kids in Sport. The event raised more than $1,000 in honour of Barrie teenager Brandon Crisp, who passed away earlier this month. Oakville Chrysler Dodge Ltd. donated hot dogs and the use of its service bays for the car wash, which was managed by Jolanda Rettinger. The Rangers were also one of eight teams that earned the opportunity to play road hockey in downtown Toronto with Wayne Gretzky earlier this season. Through the sale of pink hockey pins, the Rangers raised more than $600 for the fight against breast cancer.
