Come and Party where you can... here's no place like home for a cat. Between yesterday (Dec. 5) and Dec. 14, the Oakville and District Humane Society (ODHS) hopes you'll help make that dream come true for one of the 500 cats currently in its care. The ODHS is holding its first Happy Cat Adopt-a-thon to reduce the significant number of felines currently housed at the shelter and in foster homes in the community. "We've never held an adopt-a-thon before, but due to the volume of animals in our care, and the capacity of our facility, we needed to try a new way to encourage people to adopt," said ODHS Executive Director Johanne Golder. The ODHS is a charitable organization with a building located at 445 Cornwall Rd. The shelter was built in 1936 and has seen few renovations since first opening. With the growth of the towns of Oakville and Milton (both served by the ODHS), the demands on the building have increased significantly. "We currently have more than 100 cats in foster care out in the community, which is an enormous help when dealing with this volume," added Golder. "With a building originally designed to house 175 cats, and 500 in our care, it is critical we ask for increased support from the community. We'd like to see these animals living with loving families." Cats of all shapes, sizes and ages will be available for adoption at a reduced price between now and Dec. 14. The ODHS is waiving its usual adoption fees and asking for Carlotta came to the shelter in April 2007. She is a domestic, short-hair black, female cat, approximately two years old. Although she can be nervous meeting new people, Carlotta does warm up once she gets to know you and loves chin rubs. She is also well-suited to a quiet home. Each cat comes with a story and different personality and humane society staff will try to ensure the cat is well-paired with its new family. "We do not want these cats to be adopted only to find themselves back at the shelter once owners realize what is required for their care," said Golder. "It is a big commitment to bring an animal into your home and we want to ensure these animals are given the best opportunity to stay with their new family in their new home." Besides having shelter staff resources assist with helping cat owners, the shelter is also offering some perks during the Happy Cat Adopt-a-thon. Each adopted cat will go home with a microchip (cat identification is required by law in the Town of Oakville), upto-date vaccinations, de-worming, a collar and tag and six weeks of pet insurance. To find out more, visit the shelter at 445 Cornwall Rd. or call 905-845-1551. SET YOUR FROGGIES FREE! PET OF THE WEEK: Sophie likes to snuggle up next to you while you work, sleep or watch TV. For more information, visit www.oakvillehumane.ca. a $50 donation for each cat adopted. The Happy Cat Adopt-a-thon offers an affordable way to bring an animal into your household. Among the cats up for adoption are Sophie and Carlotta. Sophie has been at the shelter since 1999 and is the namesake of the ODHS on-site retail outlet "Sophie's Place." Sophie is a spayed, domestic, long-hair tortoiseshell female ready to retire into a home. She is 13 years old and loves people and bird watching from the window. She eats hypo-gastro food to help with hairballs and a sensitive stomach and requires blood work periodically to monitor her thyroid. She does not like being picked up, but enjoys head scratches and face pets. Sophie would be ideally suited to a quiet home that has no other pets. A: BOTOX Cosmetic is an injectable treatment derived from Q: Who should be injecting BOTOX? A: BOTOX injection is a medical procedure, and for your a purified protein. It is manufactured under strict quality control standards and is administered in extremely dilute dosages. A tiny amount is injected into the muscle that creates the dynamic wrinkle. When BOTOX is injected into the muscle, it blocks the nerve impulse from reaching that area, and as a result, the muscle relaxes and the dynamic wrinkle overlying the muscle is smoothed away. It gives the face a more relaxed and refreshed appearance. Best of all, regular use of this treatment will soften expression lines and help to "stop the clock" on the development or further deepening of lines. Hopedale Shopping Centre Suite 220, 2nd Floor Dr. Rosenblat D.D.S. 905-827-0301 Q: A: What dental gifts are available to give this Christmas? While dental products may not be the first thing you think of to give at Christmas, there are some stocking stuffers that your family and friends might appreciate. If someone is looking to start off the New Year with a new look, a gift certificate for professional dental tooth whitening is a great way for anyone to have a brighter smile. In as little as one hour you can really get off to a "white Christmas". More advanced cosmetic procedures like veneers can be a great gift for someone who may be planning to do their own makeover for that new look in 2009 too. Of course the large variety of electric tooth brushes, tooth flossers and inexpensive tooth whitening kits on the market today can be great stocking stuffers too. I've found that electric toothbrushes are a great way to get kids to brush longer because it's more fun! 2008 has been a memorable year and it's been nice to hear the positive feedback on these monthly columns. Thanks for reading! On behalf of my office team and myself, I would like to wish all of you, a Merry Christmas and a healthy, happy New Year. Great things start with a warm healthy smile! the dentist@dentistry4.com www.dentistry4.com safety, Health Canada requires injections to always be performed under the direct supervision of a physician to minimize your risks and side effects. The injections take approximately 10 to 15 minutes and you may then return to normal activity. An improvement can be seen within days and may last up to 6 months, although results may vary. One thing to remember is that BOTOX is intended to enhance the way you look, not change it. The Oakville Beaver is looking for newspaper carriers in your neighbour hood!
