In the past, patients having an amputation because of diabetes would be offered government-funded rehabilitation, but not patients with cancer, noted Steele. In the past, patients with cancer may not have had a similar prognosis for life expectancy, however Steele said, "It's 2009 and we're saving a lot of people now," noting cancer survival rates are climbing. Exercise has the ability to advance the quality of life of cancer patients and reduce symptoms during and following treatment." Judy Perry Brinkert, Wellspring week program focuses on restoring and improving the physical well-being of individuals who are undergoing, or have completed cancer treatment. Lending a hand to the cause is a group of local women who have dubbed themselves, Irondames, and are rising to the challenge of fundraising for Wellspring's cancer exercise program. Inspired by a friend whose quality of life has been boosted after incorporating complimentary therapies into her fight against cancer, the group intends to raise funds while training for and completing Ironman Canada in August 2010. The Ironman, which consists of a 4 km swim, 180km bike ride and 42km run, was selected as symbolic of cancer treatment and survivorship. The Irondames say that like the competition, cancer treatment puts the body through tremendous punishment, but it is the mind that gets the person through all the training and to the finish line. Already supportive of the group's effort is 440 Fitness, Canada Get Fit and Paceperformance.
