Local taxi cab drivers are asking the Town of Oakville to issue an unlimited number of ambassador plates, a non-transferable taxi licence, which they claim would improve their working conditions. Last week, around 21 Oakville cab drivers gathered at a press conference at the Argus Road Holiday Inn, Wednesday night, to discuss changes they would like to see to their industry. The Town of Oakville will discuss the possibility of bringing ambassador plates, which essentially allow drivers to work for any taxi company in Oakville or independently without any affiliation, to Oakville during a Thursday meeting of the Taxicab Review Committee. The drivers at the meeting noted these ambassador plates would give them job security -- something that is essential in the current economic climate "They can take your living away just like that, without asking you any questions or giving you any reason," said Muhammad Javed, an Oakville United Taxi Driver. Javed was among several drivers who alleged favoritism and exploitation, which they say are taking place within their industry.
