The pair noted that the money they are investing in GO Transit will go towards the building of a multi-level parking structure, the construction of which is scheduled to being in the summer of 2010 with its completion expected in 2011. Young noted this was a particularly good deal for the people of Oakville because with the federal and provincial governments chipping in 50-50, no municipal money will be used for the parking structure and as such local property taxes will not be affected. "This is an example of where two levels of government are working together, which is exactly what the taxpayers have told us they want us to do in a recession," said Young. "This is part of a $500 million investment being made by the Province of Ontario and the federal government to upgrade GO transit facilities at 12 locations. This is the largest federal investment in Oakville in over 15 years." GO Transit officials have yet to decide exactly where they are going to build the facility at the Oakville GO Station and cannot say if existing parking spots will be impacted during construction. GO Transit spokesperson Vanessa Thomas noted that precautions are usually taken in the event of such a disruption. "Sometimes GO Transit adds temporary parking spots at a site to provide parking relief to our customers when there is a long-term parking expansion project being completed," she said. "If there was a temporary loss of parking spots at the Oakville GO Station, it would be a temporary inconvenience for a long-term solution." A parking structure at the Oakville GO Station was originally scheduled for completion in 2009. Thomas notes another delay is not likely this time.
