"When all of the Desperates get together there are about 20 of us so we're not allowed to talk about the statistics," she said. "We've all seen breast cancer and been affected by it, but we've all been lucky enough to be cancer free." The Desperates usually plan six large events around holidays, as well as six smaller events, such as dance classes, throughout the year. All proceeds are donated to the Weekend to End Breast Cancer benefitting the Campbell Family Institute at Princess Margaret. All events are held locally, and the ladies solicit local businesses to provide donations for raffles and other prizes. The Desperates will host their next event today (Friday) at the Fire Hall restaurant in Bronte for $20. Participants are encouraged to break out their green attire to go along with the St. Patrick's Day theme. The women have also enlisted the help of local band Hypogea, which is not only donating time and talent to the event, but also a portion of CD sales for the night. Although Fiddler says it takes a lot of "planning, patience, and commitment" to ensure that these events are successful, the hard work is worth it and she encourages other women to utilize their talents for a good cause. "Don't just ask for cash," she said. "Find something you're good at and be creative within your inner circle of family and friends." Whelpdale agrees and says if anyone is apprehensive about getting involved with any cause they should just give it a try. "I think everyone can find a way that they're happy doing it," she said. "I told some of my friends that I would raise their money if they just came to the walk. I just want them to experience it." As for the future of the Desperates, Fiddler is confident that their hard work will eventually pay off, but it won't mean the end of the team. "Even when there is a cure for breast cancer we want to keep the team together," she said. "We can promote something else to do with women's health, like heart disease."
