7 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, April 24, 2009 House fire causes $150,000 damage No one was harmed in a $150,000 fire that destroyed the garage of a home on Deer Run Avenue, last Sunday. Fire prevention officials said the fire started in the garage at about 7:30 p.m., but the three residents, who were still awake, fled to safety unharmed. When the Oakville Fire Department arrived on the scene a short time later the garage, which contained a car at the time, was fully engulfed in fire with some flames making their way along the outside of the building to the second floor. The fire was extinguished during the night. Due the extent of the damage, the cause of the fire has yet to be determined although officials are not ruling out the possibility that the fire was electrical or that something hot might have been put into the Blue Box or Green Cart. "The good thing is that between the garage and their laundry room they had the required metal door and it was closed at the time so that really did limit the amount of damage to the property," said Gary Laframboise, chief fire prevention officer. "We advise residents to make sure that door is always being maintained with the closer. We have had incidents in the past where a homeowner will remove the closer because they don't like the big bang that it makes.
