Youths lead the way By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF 17 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, May 1, 2009 The Regional Municipality of Halton www.halton.ca As the women of Afghanistan struggle to achieve some measure of self-determination, 20 young women from Abbey Park High School are doing what they can to help. Abbey Park student Vivian Leung, 16, founded the Abbey Park Young Women in Leadership (YWIL) Club after hearing Canadian author Sally Armstrong lecture in February. Armstrong's stories about the oppression imposed on Afghan women during the Taliban rule and their continued hardships as the war in Afghanistan continues had a profound effect on Leung. "The horrifying stories of the Afghan women and girls were so shocking and really opened my eyes to this crisis," said Leung. "Here in Canada, we are so fortunate to have, and take for granted, many freedoms and rights that they have been fighting and risking their lives to obtain. It would have been difficult to not take action to help." Leung noted she founded the YWIL with a vision to empower young women who could pass on that empowerment to others, both locally and globally. YWIL's first campaign is seeking to help the women of Afghanistan by raising awareness of their plight and fundraising for books for a new women's school in Jalalabad and for a women's resource centre, which would help Afghan women receive an education, basis health care and information about small businesses. "Last Thursday we had our launch and through a partnership with Canadians In Support of Afghan Women, we sold merchandise made by women in Afghanistan, like amulets, pillow cases, belts," said Leung. All proceeds go to the projects. YWIL has also had a bake sale, set up an information kiosk in Abbey Park's foyer and held class presentations. "I think what's preventing people from really understanding what's going on is a lot of the politics. People get caught up in the debate about should Canadian soldiers be there, should they come home," said Leung. "What's really going on with the civilians and the people kind of gets lost in the process. Despite what some people think about Canada's presence there, we should be helping these people because they are people, and the situations and the hardships that they are facing are not fair at all." To date, YWIL has raised $400. Anyone wishing to help can call 647-406-2548.
