OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, May 1, 2009 · 42 Midget Venom takes gold at own tournament The Oakville midget boys' Venom made the most of home court advantage, defeating the Brampton Warriors 57-49 in the final of their own tournament. Trevon McNeil and Mike Malo paced the offence for the Venom in the championship game while the team came up with strong defence to limit Brampton's attack. Oakville advanced to the final with a 59-53 victory over the Durham Bulldogs. Nolan Mackenzie led all scorers with 16 points while McNeil had 13. Oakville opened the tournament with a 6650 win over the Brampton Bounce, backed by a 25-point game by McNeil. Jaylen ParkinsonRoberts had 14 points. The Venom followed up with a 61-50 victory over the Burlington Skyhawks. ParkinsonRoberts, Mitch Walker and Malo were the top scorers for Oakville. In their final round-robin game, the Venom scored an easy 74-36 over Blessed Sacrament. Malo, Parkinson-Roberts and Kevin Jarrett led the Oakville offence. Bantam Venom golden in Hamilton The Oakville Venom bantam boys' basketball team won gold at the recent Blessed Sacrament tournament in Hamilton. Oakville clinched the title with a 52-42 victory in the final over the Ancaster Magic, a team the Venom had managed a two-point overtime win against in the round robin. Members of the team are Sean Barich, Eli Rodney, Thomas Evers, Mitchell Osborne, Sebastian Ruscica, Scott Cece, Adam Thornton, Ryan Bekker, Kevin Kecskemeti, Keenan Danso-Dapaah, Zaid Dawood, Theo Will-Dryden and Denver Kotack. Gerardo Torres, Sieg Will and Laszlo Kecskemeti coach the team. Patchell named SAC all-star Braeden Patchell of Oakville was named to the All-South Atlantic Conference tennis second team. Oakville faced the powerful Buffalo Bisons in the tournament semifinal and appeared to win the game in a sudden-death shootout after Caitlyn Bevington scored on her attempt and Hornets' netminder Susie Dunn stopped the Buffalo shooter. However, the Bisons coaching staff protested the game and the referees allowed the shootout to continue, leading to an apparent victory by Buffalo. Following the game, a meeting was held between the tournament conveners, referee-in-chief and coaches from both teams, where Oakville was once again determined the victor. The Hornets would go on to drop a 4-0 decision to the St. Catharines Chaos in the final. Lara Kuipers was named Oakville's MVP in the championship game.
