The application, made by the Town last Friday, focuses on three areas including the redevelopment of the Town's transit facility, road rehabilitation and park revitalization. "Voters expect municipalities, provinces and the federal government to work together to build a stronger economic future for Canada and this funding couldn't be more needed," said Oakville Mayor Rob Burton. "It would allow us to meet the Town's increasing infrastructure renewal needs sooner and at less cost to our local taxpayer. It will create construction jobs and provide much needed stimulus to the economy." As part of the 2009 budget, the federal government announced the creation of a new $4 billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund to provide funding to municipalities across Canada primarily for the rehabilitation of infrastructure. Under the fund, the federal and provincial governments match municipal contributions towards infrastructure projects with all parties sharing one-third of the total project cost. Oakville Mayor Rob Burton Oakville is hoping this fund will see the Town, the Province and the Government of Canada each contribute $23.8 million towards $71.4 million worth of infrastructure projects. In one such project the Town requested $30 million in funding towards the $45 million required to update its transit facility. Officials note the current transit building is more than 30 years old, is deteriorating and can no longer accommodate the Town's growing fleet or workforce. Due to funding constraints construction was not slated to begin on a new transit facility until 2012, however, funding from the stimulus fund would move the project ahead by at least two years. The application also asked the federal and provincial governments to cover $14.7 million of the $22 mil- lion needed for infrastructure renewal for roads, trails, cycleways and storm sewer projects. Road infrastructure renewal projects include an accelerated hot mix program, reconstruction of Lakeshore Road West from Third Line to East Street and reconstruction of McCraney Road and Sixth Line. Another $2.8 million was requested for park redevelopment projects with the total cost sitting at $4.2 million. Parks redevelopment projects include Westwood Park and Bronte Heritage Waterfront Park. The Infrastructure Stimulus Fund provides $2 billion in 2009-10 and $2 billion in 2010-11 for projects that can begin construction within 60 days of funding approval and can be completed by March 31, 2011. Projects also have to demonstrate that they would not have been built over the next two construction seasons without the federal and provincial funding. Other Town infrastructure projects, such as the renovation of QE Park, were not eligible for this fund because of this timeline requirement. The Town hopes to get a response to its application by the summer.
