Field Day for Hams in Halton Halton amateur Ham Radio enthusiasts will join others across North America showing off their disaster and emergency communications capabilities on Saturday and Sunday. Operating from a rural field off Walkers Line, north of Dundas Street in Burlington, Ham operators will set up a radio communications network capable of communicating with other Hams around the world. Over the past few years, Ham operators have provided critical communications in emergencies including the California wildfires, Manitoba floods, tornadoes, earthquakes, and other events world-wide. During Hurricane Katrina, amateur radio -- also called Ham radio -- was often the only way people could communicate. The annual Field Day event helps Hams practice their emergency communications skills using voice, digital modes, and even good old fashion Morse Code, over a 24-hour period which tests equipment and operator endurance. This year, operating from a rural undeveloped farm field means the Burlington and Oakville Amateur Radio Club members will have to construct and operate a fully functional communications station from scratch, without electricity or any other commercial utilities. There are an estimated 50,000 licenced Hams in Canada (650,000 in the U.S. and more than 2.5 million worldwide).
