Although Canadian and Olympic basketball star Carol Hamilton-Goodale passed away from cancer in March 2003 at age 38, her passion for the game is being instilled in local youths through the work of her parents. Glen and Lystra Hamilton are holding a special day of music to raise money for the Carol Ann Hamilton Junior Basketball Camp Fund. The fund covers the cost of sending underprivileged Oakville youths aged 6 to 13 to a local summer basketball camp in August. "We're trying to instill the legacy she left behind in young boys and girls to get them off the streets and send them to summer camp," said Glen Hamilton. "I told Carol on the last day before she passed away, don't worry, your name will live on." The musical extravaganza runs Canada Day from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the bandshell in Coronation Park, 1426 Lakeshore Rd. W. The event will feature a variety of musical genres. "There's going to be steel bands, dancers and all kinds of music, like bluegrass, country, gospel, reggae and more," said Glen, who will be performing a number of country gospel tunes with wife Lystra. "There are some local performers and others are from Toronto." And the Hamiltons are making the concert accessible to all, as admission is by donation. "We want everyone to be able come out and enjoy themselves," Glen said. The couple has organized a smaller-scale fundraising concert in December for the past three years, but it has not raised enough money to cover the full cost of sending the kids to a local basketball camp. The Hamiltons have made up the funding shortfall the past three years. Last year, 25 students were sent to camp though the fund. This year, the Hamiltons already have 35 youths signed up who want to use the fund to go to camp. The camp costs $60 per child. The couple is hoping the new venue and summer date will make the difference and raise the needed funds. "A lot of the time we'd have about 150 people, but it has been increasing each year," Glen said. "This will be the first time we do it in the summer. It's hard work, but I'm doing it for the sake of my daughter." Glen and Lystra's CD, Please Take This Message to My Daughter, will be on sale at the site, with proceeds going to the fund. "We wrote songs about Carol, so CDs will be on sale there," Glen said. "If people want to donate to the fund, they can do that too, and that would be good for us." The event will also feature food vendors, selling such goodies as the ever-popular Jamaican beef patties.
