5 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, July 8, 2009 Change of pace for busy family Continued from page 4 The adventures the family will be encountering as they travel will be many with the Discovery expected to participate in the Caribbean 1,500 in late October. The annual sailing rally will see the Discovery accompany a number of other sailboats on the 10-day excursion of 1,500 nautical miles from the Chesapeake Bay area to Bermuda. "That passage is non-stop. There is nowhere to pull over," said Elizabeth. "People have asked me, `Ten days straight, where do you stop at night time,' and you don't stop, you sail all night long. That will be our first open ocean sailing." Despite crossing such vast distances, Elizabeth noted there will be weeks where the boat stays at a dock. These down-time periods, she said, will be used by the family to visit wherever they happen to be, by renting cars and going on day trips. LISA KORTMANN / OAKVILLE BEAVER HOME SWEET HOME: The Brouse family relaxes inside the cabin of the Discovery. As this undertaking represents a major change in lifestyle, each family member noted there will be challenges to overcome. Kirk said his challenge will be to learn how to accept a slower pace of life. For Claire, entertaining herself offers the greatest challenge while Wesley noted that home schooling will require some adjustment. Elizabeth said the real challenge will be all of them being together 24/7 in a very confined space. "I think the biggest challenge will also be the biggest benefit," she said. The family will be updating friends and family about their progress through the website http://web.me.com/saildiscovery/Discovery/Welcome.html, which will contain blogs the children must update regularly as part of their schoolwork. The family is also hoping people will use this website to update them on what is happening in Oakville while they are away.
