Vol. 52 No. 88 Celebrities have Open buzzing on first day By Tina Depko OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF It was what many would consider to be an ideal start to the week of the RBC Canadian Open. Sunny skies, thousands of spectators and good golf played by names like Mike Weir, Anthony Kim, Michael Jordan and Kevin Costner were just a few of the reasons why Glen Abbey Golf Club was the place to be on Monday. Although tournament play does not kick off until Thursday, big names came out Monday for the inaugural Mike Weir Charity Classic. The fundraiser saw 21 teams of amateur golfers paired with PGA Tour pros and celebrities. The chance to play with the likes of Stephen Ames or Martin Brodeur came with the price tag of $35,000 per foursome. All proceeds went to the Mike Weir Foundation, which supports children's health care and related causes across Canada. Monday's event was expected to raise more than $1 million thanks to additional proceeds raised at an auction held later in the day. "I'm really blown away at this inaugural event with the turnout of fans we've had today, the players and celebrities taking time out of SERVING OAKVILLE FOR 25 YEARS! 175 Wyecroft Rd. Tournament play begins Thursday. One month ago a Mississauga rally blasted the Province's proposal to bring a gas-fired power plant to the Clarkson Airshed and now Oakville is getting ready to do the same. The Oakville rally, which is being put together by the Chartwell-Maple Grove, Clearview, Joshua Creek and Southeast Oakville Residents' Associations, will take place on Tuesday, July 28, at the Chisholm Educational Centre, 1484 Cornwall Rd. Starting at 7 p.m. the event will feature such participants as Oakville Mayor Rob Burton, Halton Region Chair Gary Carr, Halton MPP Ted Chudleigh and Ward 3 Councillors Keith Bird and Mary Chapin. At the heart of the matter are four companies that are currently bidding on a contract to build and operate the power plant with the Ontario Power Authority (OPA).
