The unit was busy during the Civic Holiday weekend. More than 50 vessels were stopped and inspected by officers, which resulted in 11 charges being laid and more than 60 boaters receiving a warning for various infractions. A potential tragedy was averted by an alert citizen, who called police about unsafe activity that he observed. On Aug. 4, at approximately 5:30 p.m., the police received a call from a resident who watched three youths get into a small rubber raft on Lake Ontario, at the foot of Kerr Street. The raft was only three metres long and was powered by a small electric trolling motor. Marine Unit officers located the vessel approximately 500 metres from shore, near the Oakville Harbour.
