OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, August 19, 2009 · 12 Mind, Body & Sole prepares for Walk for the Cure A Bronte businesswoman will host a fundraiser tonight, Wednesday, Aug. 19, in support of the Weekend to End Breast Cancer this fall. Mind, Body and Sole's Walk for-the Cure Fundraising Gala to benefit Princess Margaret Hospital's Walk for the Cure will be at Oakville's Harbour Lighthouse at the Harbour Banquet Conference Centre & Lighthouse Restaurant, 2340 Ontario St. Cocktail hour is 6:30-7:30 p.m. with networking and presentations from 7:30-10 p.m. Tickets cost a $50 donation and are available by contacting 905-582-7822 or e-mail kim.murphy@cogeco.ca or can be made online. "Any donation will go directly to Princess Margaret for breast cancer research, that is what matters most," said Murphy who is a life coach supporting women. "I have been very blessed in my life. I have never been touched directly by breast cancer. I have become friends with a woman who is a breast cancer survivor, I have an ex-sister-in-law who is a breast cancer survivor and an aunt I never really knew also had breast cancer. The reason I chose to walk for the cure is I am female, I have three daughters and I am able to give back. This is the very least I can do," said Murphy. The Oakville entrepreneur said the idea was a way to promote businesses, fundraise and have a fun night out. "I met with a friend, Vivian Partridge of www.mediumwelldone.ca who organizes trade shows, and here we are," said Murphy. Featured at the event will be Scott Stratten of @unmarketing, Anne Day of Company of Women and Jeff Michener from Jeff and Jerome Cosmetics giving a makeover on stage. BellyUp Dance Studio will host a performance at intermission and has donated a Diva Party worth $500 to the silent auction. HealthSCAN, which uses Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging to promote early detection is providing a coupon for a $50 health scan to everyone attending. Vendors will include a variety from a psychic to chiropractor. For more information, visit www.mindbodyandsole.ca. Red Leafs rallying to help restock shelves at needy local food banks The Canadian Red Leafs women's soccer team heading to Australia for the Masters in October, will host a car rally and barbecue this Saturday, Aug. 22 to raise funds -- and is asking for food donations to assist Oakville food banks. The Kerr Street Market and Salvation Army are both short on food supplies, while Fareshare is grateful for all donations as it holds out for its fall food drive. Food donations are being sought in response to a story about the food banks in last week's Oakville Beaver. The rally's start time is 1 p.m. It will take place throughout Burlington and Hamilton. All are welcome, driver's need a valid licence, to navigate the course using clues and maps. There will be detour stops, prizes and $100 (determined by points, not time) for the winning car. Cost is $25 per person and includes the barbecue. To participate, visit www.canadianredleafs.com.
