17 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, August 21, 2009 Kelley's Angels car wash Sunday By Angela Blackburn OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Volunteers for Kelley's Angels fundraising car wash and barbecue in Bronte on Sunday may be wearing undies. That's because the angelic team is raising money for The Underwear Affair fundraising walk on Aug. 29. It's sponsored by Joe Boxer and all proceeds go towards North York General Hospital. The event is meant to raise awareness for cancers below the belt such as ovarian, prostate, colon, and more. "Our team will be walking in our undies in support of these cancers," said Ashley Pennycook, 21. The Kelley behind Kelley's Angels is Pennycook's sister, Kelley, aged 26, who has colon cancer. There is also a 10k run that teams can participate in, but the Oakvillebased team, most of whose members hail from the Bronte area, has chosen to walk. "Our team has been very successful so far in raising money and to date, we have raised $8,230 and the number keeps going up. It all started with my sister. She is the inspiration behind our decision to walk in this event," said Pennycook. On Sunday, however, the car wash will take place in the side parking lot of Sobeys on the corner of Lakeshore Road and Jones Street between 11-4 p.m. Kelley's Angels is thanking Sobeys for allowing them use of the parking lot and for a donation to the barbecue, which will be held across the street in the lot of Hair Body and Soul Salon. Car washes cost $5 per car and hamburgers will be $2, hot dogs and drinks will be $1. Following the birth of her son Jacob in 2008, Kelly was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. "Our team, Kelley's Angels, is comprised of some pretty awesome people, if I do say so myself. Being Kelley's sister and fighting alongside with her, our family is very grateful for all the support her friends have given during this time. Our family and Kelley couldn't do it without them. The team is made up of Kelley's close friends and those who support her. For that, Kelley calls us her angels," said Pennycook. "Although we do what we can, Kelley is the true angel as she has been fighting for over a year and has done all of this with a smile on her face and the utmost positivity. I am extremely proud to call her my sister and my best friend," said Pennycook. The team started with just four -- Kelley, Ashley, Christine Tonkens and Dawn Mortimer. It has now grown to eight with the addition of Pamela Bond, Jenn Turner, Sarah Hart and Alanna Negri. "We hope to raise enough money on Sunday to bring our team total to $10,000 and our ultimate goal through this is to raise awareness and shed some light on cancers below the belt. Colon cancer is preventable, treatable and beatable with early detection," said Pennycook. "I couldn't make it through this without the help of my beautiful family and my amazing angels walking the earth disguised as my friends. I have never shed so many tears, but at the same time I have never lived and laughed as much in my whole life. My son gives me hope every time he smiles at me and gives me the strength to fight through any hard day I might have. I believe in a cure and I believe that I will be here to dance with my son Jake at his wedding," states Kelley on her walk webpage. Donation boxes have been put up at selected locations in Bronte, including Lick's, Bucci Hair Salon, CJ's Café, the Firehall Restaurant and Sammy's Chip Wagon.
