OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, September 3, 2009 · 26 Shepley to carry the Olympic torch Oakville professional golfer Jessica Shepley has been selected by RBC to be one of the Olympic torchbearers for next year's Winter Games in Vancouver. Shepley will be one of approximately 12,000 Canadians who will carry the flame across the country beginning this fall. "I am excited and honoured to be part of something as extraordinary as the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay and I want to thank RBC for this opportunity," said Shepley, a rookie on the LPGA Tour who is competing in this weekend's CN Canadian Women's Open. "For me, the Olympic Games are all about people coming together to celebrate teamwork and incredible talent. I am passionate about sport and I can't wait to have a part in this once-in-a-lifetime experience." The 2010 Olympic Torch Relay will begin on Oct. 30, 2009, when the flame arrives in Victoria following a traditional lighting ceremony in Greece. The Olympic Flame will then travel from coast to coast, through every province and territory in Canada, spanning 45,000 kilometres and more than 1,000 communities over the course of 106 days. It will end at Vancouver's B.C. Place on Feb. 12, 2010, when the lighting of the Olympic Cauldron will signal the start of the Olympic Winter Games.
