This is the first batch of positive mosquitoes found in Halton Region this year. The mosquitoes were collected from the area of Cornwall and Chartwell Roads in the Town of Oakville. "Mosquitoes are the key indicator of the risk of West Nile virus infection and until the weather begins to cool down, mosquitoes, and the threat of West Nile virus, will be present," said Dr. Bob Nosal, Halton Region Medical Officer of Health. "West Nile virus activity appears to be low this year but Halton residents need to keep taking precautions like covering up, avoiding peak mosquito activity times and wearing insect repellent with DEET." Mosquitoes can transmit WNV to humans after becoming infected by feeding on the blood of birds carrying the virus. In order to reduce mosquito breeding sites, residents are advised to get rid of all water-filled containers and objects and change the water in bird baths at least once per week. Maps showing the locations of positive mosquito pools, as well as standing water sites that have had larvicide applied are available on the Health Department's website at www.halton.ca/wnv.
