Town restores old headstones The Town of Oakville has spent around $50,000 to restore more than 50 century-old headstones and monuments located throughout the town's historic cemeteries. The restoration completes the first phase of the town's monument restoration project, which is targeting monuments that are structurally unsafe or requiring great repair. "These monuments are the lasting legacy of Oakville's early settlers," said Chris Mark, director of Parks and Open Space. "By restoring these markers, we preserve our history and honour the memory of these pioneer families." The Town has identified more than 2,000 headstones and monuments as needing some kind of restoration work, which can range from raising markers to pinning broken pieces to stabilizing foundations and removing organic growth and vegetation. The Town is responsible for the preservation, stabilization and restoration of markers and monuments under the Cemeteries Act with the Town pointing out that the monuments will be restored according to Ontario Heritage Act guidelines. The monument project, which began earlier this year, encompasses all seven of Oakville's historic cemeteries and is expected to take between seven to 10 years to complete.
