33 · Friday, November 27, 2009 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com Concert at St. Jude's to reach grandmas in Africa H ello from Halla! Our herd is travelling in Uganda this month, slowly crossing great distances. My brother, sister and I have been tired, but my grandmother urges us onward, so we keep trekking forward. My grandmother told us a story to inspire us to focus on our future destination. She told us the story of Justine, Richard and Robert Ojambo -- three bright, impoverished boys who were orphaned in Uganda when their mother Pheobe died of AIDS. The boys, helped by a Dutch missionary, survived to graduate from school and attend European universities. Inspired by the memory of their mother, they returned from their studies to Uganda to work with impoverished rural women and children. In 2003, the brothers founded the Pheobe Educational Fund for AIDS orphans and Vulnerable Children (PEFO), in their mother's name. PEFO began with a microfinance project for women, but then set up self-growth clubs for children and paid for school fees, uniforms and food. PEFO is now supporting more than 300 orphans and vulnerable children, and 200 grannies who care for them. The Stephen Lewis Foundation has supported PEFO by purchasing a brick-making machine to build houses for grannies. PEFO also helps by creating huge organic gardens, with spinach, onions, chives and more, all pesticidefree, to help feed the grannies and orphans. $Million or More Oakville ($MOMO) offers regional families a chance to celebrate the upcoming holidays while supporting the Stephen Lewis Foundation's efforts to Turn The Tide of HIV/AIDS and support some 300 projects like PEFO in 15 African countries. Enjoy a festive reading of the classical Christmas favourite A Christmas Carol featuring wellknown radio personalities accompanied by choir at St. Matthew Parish, 1150 Monks Passage. There is an evening performance on Friday, Dec. 4 from 7 to 9:30 p.m., and an afternoon family performance on Sunday, Dec. 6 from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Radio personalities include Judy Maddren, Barbara Budd, Kevin Sylvester, and Vince Carlin, and the cast will also be joined by well-known Canadian actress Rosemary Dunsmore. And please observe World AIDS Day on Dec. 1. Later on Dec. 12, $MOMO will be sponsoring An Evening of Inspirational Music at St. Luke's Church at 2 p.m. featuring Allison Lynn and Gerald Flemming performing southern jazz, Gospel music and Christmas favourites. As $MOMO efforts draw to a close along with 2009, I want to thank everyone who has volunteered their time, donated to the Stephen Lewis Foundation, and encouraged others to support their work in Africa. You should feel very positive about your efforts. Oakville has truly been making a difference, in my home -- Africa. Halla is a 13-year-old female African Savannah elephant working with $Millions or More Oakville ($MOMO) to support the Stephen Lewis Foundation (SLF) and the fight against AIDS in Africa.
