Oakville Edge hosts skating gala Sunday The Oakville Edge synchronized skating teams will host their annual Gala of Synchronized Skating Sunday, Nov. 29 at River Oaks Recreation Centre. This year's gala will feature the full spectrum of synchronized skating, from the Oakville Edge Intro-toSynchro team to visiting teams from Leaside and Gwillimbury to internationally-ranked teams Nexxice and Black Ice. The annual crowd favourite team of dads, Oakville Edgeless, will also be putting on a performance during the two shows, which are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. The Gala is the start of this year's synchronized skating season, so performers will be introducing new programs. Oakville Edge synchronized skating teams include two Intro-toSynchro squads and four competitive teams (beginner, elementary, juvenile and novice). Skaters of all ages will be participating. The gala will also offer a bake sale, 50/50 draws and a silent auction. Doors will open at 1 p.m. and all are welcome. Admission is $10 at the door and $7 in advance. Ninth-degree black belt Grand Master Kong Young Il had the attention of 50 selected students and instructors from Ontario, Alberta and New Mexico as he shared his world of experience. Basic techniques, patterns and sparring drills were also covered and discussed. Grand Master Kong Young Il is a first-generation student of General Choi Hong Hi, the founder of taekwon-do. Kong is known for teaching the martial art with the same approaches and rigour he learned from Choi Hong. Kong was the national champion of Korea from 1963-1966 and was one of the first to introduce taekwon-do to America. The next seminar at Morningstar Taekwon-Do is scheduled for April 24, 2010.
