Apply defensive pressure to your opponent and victory is always within grasp. It seems his club has been listening. For the second time in three years, the Cavaliers are Halton Division 2 champions after defeating the Corpus Christi Longhorns 56-49 Tuesday at Sheridan College. "We don't necessarily have more talent, but we teach defence and they work hard on it and that's defining our program right now," Bulthuis said. Back on Feb. 1, the Longhorns defeated the host Cavaliers 55-46 in regular-season action, a loss Bulthuis attributed to "just letting them shoot whatever they wanted." In the early moments of Tuesday's contest, KCC allowed no such repeat. The Cavaliers got off to a 14-2 run in the opening six minutes of the first. Guard Erin Gulersin gave them a 19-8 lead by hitting a three-pointer with a second left in the quarter. He would then hit a three-point buzzerbeater to put KCC up 30-20 at the half. The Longhorns started the second half on a 4-0 run before Gulersin's reverse lay-in at 5:20 put the Cavaliers up by eight. KCC went on a 6-2 run in the next three minutes, but Corpus Christi scored six consecutive points to end the quarter, trailing 38-33 going into the fourth. "When we controlled the ball, we took 30, 40 seconds off the clock." Bulthuis said. "When we didn't, we allowed them back in." While Gulersin lead all scorers with 20 points, he got some help from teammate Martin Cho, who hit a three-pointer at 5:37 of the fourth and a fast-break lay-in, giving the Cavaliers a 43-35 lead. Corpus Christi's Aaron Manning would hit a three at 1:57 to cut the deficit to 49-43, but KCC hit three of its next four at the line to secure the victory. Now Bulthuis will prepare his club for a meeting with Brampton Christian on Monday with a berth in the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations `A' tournament on the line. "We've played them before and they're feisty," he said. "We have to play tough defence, knock'em down and make sure they get no threes." For Corpus Christi, head coach Tom Skrban is looking forward to next season when his team moves to Division 1 play. "We got a young team, we're getting everyone back," he said. "If everyone can play at the same intensity and learn from it, we should (be competitive) in Division 1 next year." Cordingley finalist for NLL Hall of Fame Blades win first playoff game Toronto Rock head coach and Oakville resident Troy Cordingley is one of six finalists chosen for the National Lacrosse League Hall of Fame 2010 ballot. Cordingley played in the NLL for nine years, recording 128 regular season goals along with 184 assists. He added 33 points in the postseason. He was also a part of two championships with the Buffalo Bandits and was on the team in `93, when it completed the only undefeated season in league history. He spent time as an assistant coach with the Bandits before being named as the head coach of the Calgary Roughnecks, who won the Champion's Cup last season. Cordingley then came to work as the head coach in Toronto in July. Since joining the Rock, the team is off to a torrid start. The Rock has gone 6-2, the best start in team history. Former Rock player Dan Stroup was also nominated. Stroup won three championships with Toronto and was named Champion's Cup MVP in 2000. The Oakville Blades opened the Provincial Junior A Hockey League playoffs Tuesday with a 4-1 victory over the Aurora Tigers at Joshua's Creek Arenas. Kellan Lain, Dustin Alcock, Kyle Blaney and Kyle Lysaght scored in the series opener for the Blades, who outshot Aurora 32-17. Michael Sardella replied for the Tigers. Daniel Savelli recorded the victory in goal for the Blades. The series was scheduled to continue last night (Wednesday) with Game 2 in Aurora.
