There are still two nights left, today and Friday, for the Halton district school drama productions which are running at Nelson High School in Burlington. The participating Oakville high schools are Oakville Trafalgar, T. A. Blakelock, Holy Trinity Catholic, St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic and White Oaks. The performances are part of the 64th annual Sears Ontario Drama Festival in which about 350 Ontario high schools are participating. The festival began last month and it runs until mid-May across Ontario. There are three levels to the festival. First is the District Festival. In the case of the local schools, they will participate at the 2010 Halton Sears Drama Festival where 13 Halton Region schools are participating in Burlington. In the next level, district finalists are invited to one of six regional showcases, which happen in April. Lastly, two outstanding productions from each region will be invited to the Ontario showcase. This year's Ontario showcase is happening at the Sanderson Centre in Brantford. Participating schools will be vying for the outstanding performance awards at the first two levels in order to move on to each of the following rounds. The final showcase is non-competitive where the awards will be handed out to individual students and groups. Scholarships, ranging from $500-$3,000, are available to students to help them in pursuing a career in the performing arts. The duration of the plays is between 15-50 minutes. Locally, the performance nights begin at 7 p.m. with several productions being staged each night.
