Sheridan wants to bring hi-tech movie-making to low budget productions By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF 5 · Wednesday, March 17, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com With $4.9 million in funding and the goahead from Ontario's Ministry of Research and Innovation, Sheridan College will work to improve screen-based technologies in Canada. The funding from the province matches contributions from the private sector and from the college and its partner on the project, the University of Waterloo. This brings the total to $14.7 million over the next five years to fund research into technologies for film, TV, gaming, mobile and interactive media, or things that end up on a screen or monitor. "We're setting up research partnerships in different areas to try to develop research capacity at the college to get students and faculty more involved in research, but also to help small and medium size companies to further their research abilities," said John Helliker, Sheridan College's lead faculty member on the project. The research will be conducted by staff, faculty, students and partners at Sheridan's new Pinewood Toronto Studio digital media research and training centre. The studio is located in Toronto's film and television district. The aim is to bring big-budget production technologies, such as the technology used to create the blockbuster film Avatar, to lowbudget, mainstream production companies. "Our focus is on technology innovation that can be brought into practice really quickly and we want to be able to work with industries to develop and apply new technology practices and processes that will allow industry to move forward with them really quickly," Helliker said. The idea is to create technologies that are cheaper, available quicker and capable of creating new content for screen-based industries. This technology research is designed for all types of media. "With the development of new technologies, part of what is happening is that companies are no longer just a film company or a television company or a gaming company," Helliker said. "They tend to be creating content that might be on the web, that might be part of a game, or might be part of a television show." He added, "We look at it as we're dealing with technology innovations for what we call the screen-based industries." Waterloo is recognized globally for its digital media research and the strength of its information technology graduates while Sheridan has an international reputation for the success in graduating award-winning animators, filmmakers, and designers and a focus on creative storytelling using advanced production technologies. It was the individual strengths of each institution that formed the basis of this partnership. INTRODUCING THE ALL NEW 5 GREAT REASONS TO BUY A NEW CHEVROLET, BUICK OR GMC FROM BUDDS' NOW!
