It's a magical place where everything is child-sized and the young patients get to play dentist. Actually, the magic is in the child `s dental support team who educate the children. These health care professionals are trained to guide children through challenging events like undergoing cancer treatments and surgeries. They use their skills to help children go through dental treatments without experiencing anxiety. "A fundamental goal of our dental practice is that no child will ever grow up to be a phobic adult," explains Dr. Walter Heidary of Pathways. He works with adults who are still struggling with the aftereffects of negative encounters with dentistry. His award-winning, child-centred approach is aimed at teaching children to look at dentistry "in a positive way". They learn in a room where everything is at their level from desktops to chairs to the actual dental chair. Children use a microscope and play the part of the dentist with large puppets acting as patients. The puppets have lifelike teeth that the children examine with real dentistry tools and brush with a giant-size toothbrush. Dr. Heidary says this approach shows the child that dentistry is gentle. "They understand the sights, the sounds and the tastes and the smells that dentistry has so the the journey toward that outcome requires an active participation level of the children that's healthy!" In some situations a child may be too young or the dentistry too extensive to allow for their participation. The treatments could require the use of sedation, which is another way of avoiding a negative emotional impact, the dentist explains. His practice utilizes a similar approach with anxious adults. In fact dealing with adults who have a phobia related to dentistry has been "a revelation" that helped to bring about Pathway Dental Centre's children's program. BEAD BOUTIQUE child is prepared for that unknown encounter," Dr. Heidary suggests. The dental team leads the child through the interactive experience, ideally with the child's parent involved as well. According to Dr. Heidary, the "three-way synergy" between the team, the child and the parent contributes to the success of the program. "My commitment is to have an excellent dental experience when it's all finished but IS RELOCATING TO 1290 Speers Rd.
