Investing in Oakville's Future Healthcare In October 2009, Halton Healthcare Services submitted a formal request to the Town of Oakville for a $200 million contribution to help fund the Local Share for the New Oakville Hospital. As requested by the Town of Oakville, the deadline for making a decision about the funding has been extended. HHS and the Town have been assured that the revised deadline will not delay the release of the Request for Proposals (RFP) on May 27, 2010. Councillors in attendance at the March 1, 3 and 4 Town Council meetings heard from a number of delegations, many of whom spoke in favour of the $200 million local share request. With the decision now being deferred until the April 19 Town Council meeting, Councillors have pledged to use this additional time to gather more information about the project in order to make the best decision for Oakville. "We are very supportive of providing Councillors with access to the information they require to make an informed decision on April 19, 2010," said John Oliver, Halton Healthcare Services President and CEO. Feet For Life Many people with diabetes, cardiovascular disease and kidney failure have problems with their feet. Diabetes in particular can lead to damage to your nerves and blood vessels, which can cause loss of feeling, poor circulation and slowed healing in your feet. Although the majority of people with these illnesses do not experience serious foot problems like ulcers and amputations, the importance of proper foot care should not be overlooked. In March, the Halton Healthcare Services Renal Dialysis Program launched an exciting patient-focused initiative called "Feet For Life", aimed at diabetic as well as non-diabetic patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) at Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital and the Burlington Dialysis Centre. With this new initiative, nursing staff inspect CKD patients' feet regularly, and teach them about proper foot care to help prevent any foot problems. HSBC and Scotiabank teams racing to the finish line in 2009 5th Annual Bank Bed Challenge Race On Sunday, May 2, 2010 representatives from Oakville's six major banks (BMO Bank of Montreal, CIBC, HSBC, Royal Bank, Scotiabank and TD Canada Trust) will race distinctly decorated hospital beds along Lakeshore Road in support of the Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. In a tremendous show of community giving these banks - normally competitive rivals - collaborate to raise money throughout the month of April to buy patient care beds for OTMH. Every year for the past four years, Oakville's banks have united their efforts to participate in the Bank Bed Challenge. Their goal each year is to raise money to purchase six new patient care beds for OTMH. Patient care beds can range in price from $12,000 - $40,000. It is not well known, but government funding only goes so far and does not pay for hospital medical equipment. Hospitals need community support in order to purchase essential medical equipment to diagnose and treat patients who walk through their doors. Since the inception of this fundraiser in 2006, the Bank Bed Challenge has raised $450,000 which has purchased approximately 40 new patient care beds for our hospital to-date.
