20 Artscene "The audience seems to like the fact that I'll read a section of the book and the section will then show how a certain song came to be. I'll talk about a certain scene or emotional experience I've had with my father and how that influenced the song." Hill, who has been a musician for some 35 years, will be reading from his best-selling book. The book is about Hill's difficult relationship with his own father, Daniel Grafton Hill III, a civil rights activist. "The book is about the relationship with my father," he said. "Really, it's a book about families, it's a book about the love and the competition and the struggles and the grappling for control and how I found myself dealing with my father who tried to stop me from being a musician because he thought I was going to have a disastrous life. · FRIDAY, APRIL 2, 20101 Dan Hill `on stage' at Oakville Chapters By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF G rammy Award and five-time Juno Award-winner Dan Hill will be in Oakville Saturday, April 3 for an intimate and interactive performance and book signing. The Toronto native, pop singer and songwriter will be at Chapters at Dorval Crossing where he will put on an intimate acoustic performance and will read from and sign copies of his book I Am My Father's Son (a memoir of love and forgiveness). "I really like it," he said of the Chapters format. "I find it to be really warm because usually it's a smaller crowd, very often it's unplugged -- meaning it's without any kind of amplification. I think the music compliments the writing and the writing compliments the music. COURTESY TORY ZIMMERMAN Dan Hill "Then I traced back my father's life through all the letters that he'd written from '06 to '76, that he'd donated to the provincial archive, and interspersed the book with his letters to show the reader what made him become the man, the husband and the father that he was." The musical performance will include songs from his most recent album, Intimate, which came out in March. "My album Intimate is similar (to the book) in that a lot of the songs were inspired by my relationship with my father. I emerged from the experience of writing the book inspired to write more songs." Not all the songs on the album are new however. Half of the songs featured in the album, which were all written by Hill, have been previous hits by famous artists such as Backstreet Boys and 98 Degrees. Hill will perform right on the floor of the Chapters store. "To me it's all the same thing, it's all storytelling. It's all about stories." The event runs 1-2 p.m. The store is at 310 North Service Rd. W. For information, visit www.danhill.com.
