Hospital president still tops Halton's sunshine list By Tim Foran METROLAND WEST MEDIA GROUP 3 · Wednesday, April 7, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com John Oliver, president and CEO of Halton Healthcare Services (HHS), is still the highest paid public sector official in Halton, even though his take home pay was $134,000 less in 2009 than the previous year. Oliver, who heads up the corporation that runs hospitals in Georgetown, Milton and Oakville, received $500,919.80 salary and taxable benefits in 2009 (26.71 per cent less than 2008), according to the Province's "Sunshine List" -- the public sector salary disclosure of individuals earning more than one hundred grand. The list does not include federal public service officials. Mags Shorey, chair of the board of directors at HHS, said Oliver's compensation dropped for two reasons. The first is that there were 27 pay periods in 2008, rather than the usual 26. The second is that the board agreed in 2007 to provide Oliver with a one-time lump sum payment, which was paid out in 2008. Despite the drop, Oliver still managed to be the highest paid public sector official in organizations serving Halton region. Two other individuals in the health sector jumped up in the rankings this past year as well. Halton Medical Officer of Health (MOH) Dr. Bob Nosal, the top public health official in the region, and the Associate MOH Dr. Monir Taha received large salary boosts after the Province agreed to higher compensation levels for MOHs across Ontario starting last spring. Because of the new agreement, Nosal received $268,086 last year, about 22.5 per cent more than in 2008. Taha's combined salary and benefits in 2009 totalled $232,353, about a third more than the previous year. At the Town of Oakville, CAO Raymond Green was the highest paid official, receiving $249,230.79 in salary and $587.09 in taxable benefits. That was less than 0.2 per cent more than in 2009. Halton Region CAO Pat Moyle received just under $261,000 in salary and taxable benefits last year. Oakville MPP and parliamentary assistant to the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities Kevin Flynn received about $133,000 in compensation. Halton MPP Ted Chudleigh's compensation remained frozen at about $127,000, according to the Sunshine List. Burlington Mayor Cam Jackson and Oakville Mayor Rob Burton received $188,766 and $174,469 in salary and benefits respectively, according to 2009 council compensation reports. According to council compensation reports, Burlington's councillors each received about $115,000 from the City and the Region, except for Jack Dennison, who took in about $106,000. Oakville's regional councillors received about $104,000 from the Town and the Region for council service, though Fred Oliver received about $9,000 less. Because councillors receive compensation from both the Town or City and the Region they were not on the Sunshine List. Sheridan College also reported an increase in the number of employees making $100,000 or more with the total tripling from the 70 in 2008 to 218 in 2009. The Province's Sunshine List was put out in 1995, but it has not been indexed for inflation since that time. According to the Society of Energy Professionals, which represents OPG employees, $100,000 in 1995 would be worth $130,991 in 2009 dollars.
