Truck crash snarls QEW The westbound lanes of the QEW slowed to a crawl yesterday afternoon following a fiery traffic crash near the Fourth Line overpass. Police said the accident took place at around 1 p.m. when a westbound cube-van slammed head-on into the centre barrier separating the lanes leading to a Ministry of Transportation inspection station from the QEW. The force of the impact sheered off at least one of the truck's wheels, which could be seen lying on the ground a few metres away, and flipped the truck onto its left side, The truck's driver, a 47-year-old Barrie man, was barely able to escape with his life as the truck was engulfed in flames. He is currently in hospital with serious, but non-life threatening burns. Police are currently trying to piece together exactly what caused the crash. "We don't know exactly why he struck them (the guardrail) yet. There could have been some kind of lane change that was involved," said Const. Graham Williamson, OPP spokesperson. "We have a number of witnesses who have come forward to advise us as to what happened." The truck was carrying a load of computer ink when it caught fire. At press time, the Oakville Fire Department had yet to determine if a HAZMAT team would be needed to remove the burnt byproduct. Police are still looking for witnesses to the accident and anyone who saw it can call the Burlington OPP detachment at 905-681-2511 or 1-888-310-1122.
