7 · Thursday, April 8, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com Oakville will host youth at risk conference On Friday April 23, Oakville will be the site of a Youth-at-Risk: Working in Street and Gang Culture Conference featuring a quartet of speakers including Darrel Scott, the father of Rachel Scott, the first victim in the Columbine High School shooting. The conference, to be hosted at the Oakville Conference Centre, will be staged by Living Rock Ministries based in Hamilton. The conference aims to bring a creative and fresh look into working with youths at risk. Youth workers and leaders from Hamilton and surrounding areas will be rallying to learn from the dynamic speakers. "This conference and the content is very timely, because we are starting to see gang-related activity where we have not before," said Halton Regional Police Chief Gary Crowell. "The Crime Prevention Committee of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, which I co-chair, is working actively with governments, gang experts and community partners to learn how best to prevent gangs and to support gang members who wish to leave that lifestyle and re-enter society. Police and other experts agree that law enforcement alone will not stop youth gangs. I believe that this conference recognizes that," said Crowell. Darrel Scott is president and founder of Rachel's Challenge. He seeks to inspire people to create a permanent positive culture change in their school, business and community through kindness and compassion. Canadian film maker Andree Cazabon, who created Letters to a Street Child, will share her experience of the hopelessness of street life. "This conference is not just going to be a seminar on theory and statistics; pointing to a problem. There comes a point where we have to stop talking about the problem and be a part of the solution," said event coordinator Geoff Beere. The conference is sponsored by Public Safety Canada's National Crime Prevention Centre and Living Rock's GPS: New Pathways for Youth. Registration begins at 8:15 a.m. and the conference will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Registration is $149 until April 9.
