Blessed Sacrament champs Kurtz recognized by OHL for character, commitment John Kurtz has been named the winner of the Ontario Hockey League's Mickey Renaud Captain's Trophy. The award is presented annually to OHL captain who best exemplifies the character and commitment of the former Windsor Spitfires captain who collapsed at home and died as the result of a genetic heart disease in 2008. The award holds special meaning to Kurtz, who has been the captain of the Sudbury Wolves for the past two seasons. The 20-year-old was a teammate of Renaud's in his rookie season in the OHL. "When I came into the OHL in Windsor, Mickey was the first guy to make me feel comfortable," Kurtz said Monday at a news conference to announce the award in Windsor. Among his other top finishes last season was a third at the Golf Association of Ontario Junior Spring Championship, third at the RCGA Future Links Western Championship and a fourth at the East Aurora Junior Masters. Taekwon-Do pioneer in town this weekend One of the pioneers of Taekwon-Do will be in town this weekend to conduct a seminar at Morningstar Taekwon-Do. Ninth Degree Black Belt Grand Master Choi Chang Keun will run the seminar Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Morningstar facility, located at 1410 Speers Rd. Grand Master Choi is a first-generation student of General Choi Hong Hi, the founder of Taekwon-Do. Grand Master Choi teaches the martial art with the same approaches and rigor he learned from General Choi Hong Hi. Among Grand Master Choi's experiences are teaching Taekwon-Do at the largest Korean Army Training Centre in 1961, winning the first Korean Taekwon-Do Championships in 1962 and winning the first Korean Taekwon-Do Full Contact Heavyweight championship in 1963. Peewee Hornets take OWHA silver The Oakville peewee A Hornets recently concluded their wildly successful season with a silver-medal showing at the Ontario Women's Hockey Association provincial championships. Oakville went undefeated through the tournament's round-robin, quarter-final and semifinal rounds to reach the championship game, where the Hornets were edged 1-0 by the Saugeen-Maitland Lightning. The Hornets won their division in regular-season play this year before claiming the Lower Lakes Female Hockey League championship. They finish the year with an overall record of 61-13-6. Telford has accepted a soccer scholarship offer from Coker College in South Carolina. Telford, one of the leading scorers for the Oakville under-18 Gunners the past few years, will compete this fall with the NCAA Division 2 Conference Carolinas champion Cobras. He will study liberal arts with a focus on sociology and psychology at Coker.
