Village has many heritage buildings Continued from page 1 Province funds greener schools With a $6.2-million funding infusion from the Province, the Halton District School Board is embarking on five projects to make schools more environmentally friendly. The projects have been given the approval and should be completed by the beginning of the next school year, this September. The projects include: · Solar panel installations at M.M. Robinson and Iroquois Ridge high schools; · Clean cooling tower technology at C.H. Norton, Silver Creek and West Oak public schools and Iroquois Ridge High School; · Advanced lighting management system at McKenzie-Smith Bennett and Hawthorne Village public schools · Greywater/rainwater recycling projects at Pineview and Limehouse public schools; · Modular rooftop solar-air heating system at Eastview Public School; The school board is contributing $1.28 million from its own budget for these projects. There are some 40 school boards across Ontario that have received funding for similar projects in their schools from the Province's Green Schools Pilot Initiative, totaling $22.5 million. 3 · Friday, April 23, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com the first public schools to include music as part of its curriculum," said Kaitting. "Palermo has the largest concentration of heritage buildings this close together outside of Old Oakville. You've got the two churches, the one-room school house, the two cemeteries, the doctor's house, the store keeper's home, the blacksmith's shop, the parsonage and its barn." He said homeowners in Palermo shouldn't fear the heritage district designation. It would not lower their property values, he said. Kaitting pointed to the heritage district of Old Oakville where, he said, property values have not fallen since designation. Kaitting said heritage district designation would not stop development from happening in Palermo, but would only make it so that any housing built would have to take on the characteristics of the surrounding heritage homes. "The builders of the new development could create something that could not be duplicated anywhere else. They have a unique opportunity here," said Kaitting. "The hope is that everyone wins in the end. The property owners get a good value for their property, the heritage buildings remain and OAKVILLE BEAVER FILE PHOTO HERITAGE ON DISPLAY: Palermo Church is one of two heritage churches in Palermo Village. we create a unique community in Oakville that becomes an example for others to follow in a place where people want to live. This is the kind of Livable Oakville we are looking for reflecting the past, but looking forward to a better future." Palermo Village surrounds the intersection of Dundas Street and Old Bronte Road. Kaitting said he also wants the portion of Palermo Village, south of Dundas Street included as part of the heritage district despite only one building (the Arson Buck House) in that area designated under the Heritage Act. Three other homes in the area are listed on the Town's Heritage Register, while two others have been labeled homes of historical interest meaning notice must be given before demolition. In their report, Town staff said the significant loss of heritage resources, changes that have occurred and the distance between clusters of heritage resources would make the successful establishment of a heritage conservation district in Palermo Village, which could withstand the likely scrutiny of the Ontario Municipal Board, unlikely. The open house concerning Palermo Village is at Town Hall, located at 1225 Trafalgar Rd., at 5 p.m. with the council meeting beginning at 7 p.m. Free hearingand over test For those 55 years old ial aring Aid Spec f rom $295 He y RETAIL & WHOLESALE LIGHTING FREE Delivery in Canada www.conceptlighting.ca Buy It Today SALE If within 60 da we will give you a 100% refund chase Featuring lighting from Framburg · Corbett · Troy · Hudson Valley Stonegate Designs · Art Craft and much more · The latest in hearing technology available · Over 20 years experience · We are an authorized clinic for DVA, WSIB and Green Shield clients Call now to book your appointment: 905-827-7333 Hopedale Hearing Clinic In Hopedale Mall, next to the CIBC 1515 Rebecca Street, Unit 38, Oakville · 905-827-7333 Oakville's Finest LIGHTING STORE 243 Speers Road · Between Kerr & Dorval · Oakville, ON ELEGANT 905.849.LITE (5483) DISTINCTIVE www.conceptlighting.ca
