www.oakvillebeaver.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, April 23, 2010 · 54 Bye to title game is important Continued from page 53 least the semifinal before yesterday's win, but Bennett said getting the bye to the final is huge for a couple reasons. "You fight all regular season for home ice advantage. In a tournament like this, everyone's on away ice, but to get the home bench advantage is big for us," he said. "And the extra day off... gives us that extra jump on (our opponent) hopefully in the final." The Blades trailed yesterday's game 1-0 in the third period before Kyle Badham notched the equalizer with 10:28 to go in regulation. Both teams had good scoring chances in the final minutes of the third period. Both teams also had apparent goals disallowed during the game, the Blades' marker ruled not to cross the goal line while the North Stars' goal was waved off because of a glove pass. Daniel Savelli made 35 saves to earn his third win of the tournament, allowing only two goals in those three contests. Oakville had improved to 2-0 at the tournament the previous evening with a 3-1 win over the Thunderbirds. Kellan Lain, Ryan Murphy and Badham scored for the Blades, who carried a 3-0 lead into the third period. Savelli's bid for a second consecutive shutout was spoiled with 2:23 to go when Soo's Colin Barnauskas finally beat him. Oakville won its first game of the tournament Tuesday over Abitibi, 6-0. "It's a good tournament," Bennett said. "(Abitibi) didn't bring their `A' game that night because they'd just finished off a long seven-game series, but they've really bounced back. Every team here has shown they're champions." -- Jon Kuiperij OVERACHIEVERS: The Oakville Vytis novice girls' team was the Cinderella story at the recent Ontario Basketball Championships in Chatham, earning silver despite being the 16th-ranked team in Ontario going into the tournament.
