Last weekend, Glen Abbey United Church raised more than $10,000 for the builds. The two platinum sponsors contributing $100,000 are Genworth Financial Canada and Whirlpool Canada. "I want to make it clear just how special it is for corporations and governments and churches to take sponsorship roles for Habitat homes," Swarbrick said. ""These sponsors aren't just supporting these builds because these families end up paying back their mortgages. So what happens is when they pay back Habitat for those mortgages, that's what creates the revolving fund that allows us to hopefully keep building more and more throughout the Region of Halton and the Town of Oakville." Swarbrick thanked government officials for their efforts in the project. "We're delighted in particular to be able to start with recognizing some of our wonderful sponsors from our government level," she said. "Because between the Region of Halton and the Town of Oakville, QUALITY INTEGRITY the two properties on which we're standing on have been paid for." Swarbrick said they're going for gold. The two houses will be built according to the standard and certification level of Built Green Canada. Edward McMahon, Habitat for Humanity Halton board chair, spoke of many firsts. "It's the first of our homes that's built to this green standard, to the extent that we're building to that standard," he said. "For this particular property, it is also the first under the recently-announced Genworth program. It's also the first one where we can actually get a shovel in the ground because it's not raining or sleeting or snowing." McMahon thanked the Town of Oakville council. "This is our first opportunity to partner with the Town of Oakville," he said. "We sincerely appreciate the leadership that the town council has shown in helping us to acquire this property to help us through the zoning that had been required to get to the point where we can build." McMahon said the need for volunteers is highest in the months of July and August when rough carpentry is scheduled. The two houses are expected to be complete in October of this year.
