About 1,000 students of the Halton Catholic District School Board plus a contingent of parents, teachers, school board administrators and elected trustees congregated at Corpus Christi Secondary School in Burlington last week to commemorate the board's first Walk With Jesus event. The day, part of Catholic Education Week activities, began with students and staff meeting at nearby Bronte Creek Provincial Park in the morning for an opening liturgy by Father Michael Loza, chaplain at Corpus Christi. From there, the throng walked several kilometres, first north along Burloak Drive and then west on Upper Middle Road to Corpus Christi. Students carried their individual school banner and a large cross with the words We Believe inscribed on each one. The crosses were built by students at Holy Trinity Secondary School in Oakville and first used in elementary school youth rallies held in Oakville last November. At the walk's end at Corpus Christi, an outdoor mass was celebrated, amid blustery winds, by Gerard Bergie, Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Hamilton. The event attracted 20 Grade 6-8 students and 20 high school students from each of the 48 Catholic schools in Halton. They were selected based on an essay contest at each school where students were asked why they wanted to be part of Walk With Jesus. "The event is intended to build a sense of community, promote social justice and enhance the students knowledge, understanding and personal experience of solidarity," said Halton Catholic board superintendent Mary Tessari. "This is our first kick at it and we hope to make it an annual event," added Tessari, noting the majority of Halton's Catholic schools were holding their own walks on the same day. Oakville trustee Alice Anne LeMay was pleased with the scope and nature of the event. "The kids thought it was neat that the cops stopped traffic for them (during the walk). What a sight. I think it's a wonderful idea," she said of Walk With Jesus. "It's important to show our faith." Students gathered pledges for the walk portion of the day with proceeds going to designated charities and programs supported by the Catholic board such as the Helping Hands for Haiti school construction project, the Dominican Republic HOPE (Health, Opportunity, Prosperity, Education) Projects, and Sleeping Children Around the World.
