Ian Anderson House, which was Ontario's first in-resident cancer hospice, has no access to natural gas and has been using propane to heat its facility and water. "It all comes down to doing the best we can for our residents and their families, but we're trying to cut costs by going green and we're the first hospice to do that and we're hoping others will follow suit," said Margaret Anderson, the hospice's founder and executive director. Now, with the installation, all water used in the hospice will be heated through energy collected by the new solar thermal system. "There's no gas lines that come out here so we have to rely on propane to heat our water and for our forced air to heat our hospice. "It is estimated the system will pay for itself within four to five years," Armstrong said. The hospice offers, free of charge, endof-life palliative care in a home-like setting to people diagnosed with terminal cancer with a limited life expectancy.
