Beaver Sports best in Ontario The Oakville Beaver Sports Section earned top honours at the 2009 Ontario Community Newspaper Association's (OCNA) Better Newspapers competition. The award was presented at the OCNA's annual awards night in Toronto on Friday. The award was the result of a team effort by Oakville Beaver sports editor Jon Kuiperij and sports reporter Herb Garbutt. Judging of the sports section was based on an entry featuring two issues of the Beaver -- May 8, 2009 and Nov. 8, 2008. The Nov. 8 section featured extensive coverage of the high school basketball playoffs and the May 8 issue was dominated by a lead story "Diamond in the rough" about golfer Kaitlin Marrin, written by Garbutt. The Oakville Beaver was also presented with the Best Cartoonist award for three entries by freelance cartoonist Steve Nease.
