Dog attacked by coyotes By Nathan Howes OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF 5 · Friday, June 18, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com A seven-year-old yellow lab is lucky to be alive following a vicious attack by two coyotes on Tuesday morning when the dog's owner, Anjali Kapoor was out walking with him on a trail between Heritage Way and Bronte Road, near Highway 25 in north Oakville. The dog, Avro, was rushed to the Fox Creek Animal Hospital shortly after the attack for emergency surgery. He is expected to survive. When the attack occurred, Avro was not on a leash and was running freely on the trail. Kapoor reacted quickly once she saw what was happening. "I made a lot of noise and had a stick in my hand and waved it, so they left immediately within a minute or so. They went into the bushes," said Kapoor. "But they did hurt him. They attacked him from behind. "He's okay. He needed a little bit of surgery to get the wounds cleaned up and stitches put in. He's at home and in stable condition." Veterinarian assistant Veronica Presz, at the Fox Creek Hospital, says the dog came in Tuesday morning suffering from deep, multiple wounds from bite marks on his back and side. "We tried flushing the wound and it ended up being a really deep wound. The doctor suggested surgery. We kept him here for the day," said Presz. "There was also a wide bite wound in his side that wasn't as bad. Basically, there were four bite wounds, three of them pretty large." According to Presz, it will take Avro about 10 days to heal. Right now, Avro is taking antibiotics and medication to treat his wounds. Luckily for him, his size saved his life. "If (he) was a smaller dog, (he) wouldn't have made it, it would have died. Avro is a large dog, over a 100 pounds," said Presz. The medical bill for Avro has so far reached $648. This is the first time the clinic has had to treat an injury from a coyote attack, but there have been sightings of coyotes before in the same area. Last month, there was a coyote sighting near St. Bernadette Catholic Elementary School, as the students were preparing to go outside for recess.
