Vol. 48 No. 79 "USING COMMUNICATION TO BUILD BETTER COMMUNITIES" 60 Pages $1.00 (plus GST) Bank robber struck quickly and often Halton police are trying to track down a serial bank robber believed to be responsible for the robbery of as many as five banks, including two in Oakville, within 90 minutes Monday. Halton Regional Police public affairs officer Sgt. Brian Carr said the spree began in Burlington shortly before 1 p.m. when the TD Canada branch at 5000 New St., was robbed. This was followed by the robbery of a Bank of Nova Scotia branch at 3505 Upper Middle Rd. in Burlington 15 minutes later. This was followed by two bank robberies in Oakville -- the Bank of Montreal, 240 North Service Rd. W., being robbed shortly after 2 p.m. and the RBC, 1005 Speers Rd., being robbed 10 minutes later. Sign posted outside Around 2:30 p.m. a CIBC Speers Road RBC. branch in Mississauga was also robbed. At each bank the suspect entered alone and handed the teller a note indicating he had a weapon and demanding money. Each time, the suspect fled on foot. In all cases the suspect was described as a teenage black male, approximately 6-foot-1 in height, wearing a dark baseball hat with a navy and white checkered hoodie and blue jeans. While Carr said police have seen serial bank robbers before, the rapid-fire way in which this one is robbing banks is unique. Halton police continues to investigate this incident. Anyone with information related to it should contact the Burlington Criminal Investigations Bureau at 905825-4777 ext. 2315 or by calling Crime Stoppers at 1800-222-TIPS (8477). Tribute honours the life of Jesse Comeau By Melanie Cummings SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Whether barreling up and down the ramps of the skateboard bowl at Shell Park, teaching martial arts at Horizon Taekwon-Do, or in classes at Thomas A. Blakelock high school, Jesse Comeau left an indelible impression on people. One year after his tragic death, the 16year-old continues to make an impres- sion. "His wide, easy smile and optimistic demeanour were infectious," said Judi Maeda, whose son Brendan was one of Comeau's best friends. She organized a tribute at Shell Park on Sunday (July 11) -- one year from the day Comeau was stabbed to death in 2009 after an argument turned violent during a party at a friend's house in Burlington. More than 100 BMX bikers, martial arts mates, school and neighbourhood friends, and family gathered at the park to ride and to remember Comeau. "It's nice to see how many lives he touched," said Jeff Wykes, 17, who first met Comeau in kindergarten at Gladys Speers school. John Frankum, 17, knows why his pal was so popular.
