Hoping for a clear sky as poetry lovers head outdoors By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Saturday Night Snuggles return The evening performances geared for families are back this summer in Town Hall and will feature stories told through dance and song. The Saturday Night Snuggles is entering its second year and will feature three performances this summer and early fall in the South Atrium of Town Hall. The performances are designed to be enjoyable for every member of the family. The first performance is on Saturday, July 24 at 7 p.m. and features the story of Wise Monkey & Foolish Crocodile based on an East Indian fable. This tale begins with a husband crocodile forced to be loyal to his wife or his friend the monkey. The wife's loyalty is based on greed while the monkey's loyalty is based on genuine friendship. Which path will be chosen? Find out by attending the show that mixes drama and dance performed by the award winning Menaka Thakkar Dance Company. On Saturday, Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. see the return of the Maderaz Latin music fiesta and carnival, a performance brought back from last year by popular demand. There will be dance rhythms and viewers will be able to join in by playing instruments, sing and respond. The third show on Saturday Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. will feature Sheesham & Lotus present Old Time Ways, a performance using music and traditional instruments from the turn of the century before the use of electricity. Your family will learn about different vocal techniques, ham-bone and even clogging as a way to live and celebrate our indigenous culture. All events are free to families. People are asked to bring blankets and cushions. "We're going to be sitting around in a circle on blankets with Tim Horton's coffee in our hands. It's quite a nice change from the coffee houses," said John Hastings, president of the local poetry group Inkwell and one of the organizers of the event. The event will take place Sunday, July 25, behind the historic Sovereign House in Bronte, 7 West River St., from 1-3 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend and read their own poetry, or, if they so choose, read the John Hastings work of a known artist. "We encourage people to bring their own stuff," Hastings said. "Once in a while someone will get excited about a poet and we'll do that but we try and encourage our own writing." Inkwell generally meets once in a month, but not in the summer, so some members thought it would be a good idea to meet outdoors in the summer. The group has done this before several years ago. "People I know, not necessarily (Inkwell) members, have decided that in the summer, just to try something different than the coffee house, we'd find a nice location and read outdoors," Hastings said. The event is free and anyone can come, however, Hastings said he cannot guess how many people will show up. "This is poetry so people are on their own wavelength here. We could have anywhere from five to 50 people. I have no idea," he said. The only thing he needs for the event to be successful is for some sun and for people to bring poetry to read. "Hopefully, if it's not raining, we'll be out on the lawn out back," he said.
