Police said approximately 15 of these burglaries -- which they believe are connected -- took place in Oakville with no single area of town being targeted more than another by the suspects. Some of the break-ins occurred while residents were away, however, most took place during the night when residents were asleep. In all cases the suspects took advantage of unlocked doors, windows or screened barriers that were easily cut open to gain entry into the home. Once inside, the suspects stole purses, wallets and jewellery. Car keys were sometimes taken and then used to steal the vehicle at the home. Neighbours have reported seeing multiple people leaving some of the burglarized homes during the time of the thefts. Halton police are calling on residents to make their home a less appealing target for thieves by taking a few simple, but effective, precautions. These precautions include locking all doors and windows when you are away or asleep at night. Police say screens, in either doors or windows, do not provide adequate security from a break-in. When residents go away on vacation they should make arrangements to have their mail/newspapers picked up and mow their lawns before they leave so that it does not appear they are gone. Take GO to Caribana Oakville residents planning to take GO Transit to see Caribana festivities this weekend are in luck as the provincial transportation provider is adding trains to its service. More trains will be in service on the Lakeshore east and west lines during the 43rd annual Caribana Festival in downtown Toronto taking place on Sunday and Monday (Aug. 1, 2). An additional Lakeshore east train will depart Exhibition Station at 8:33 p.m. making all stops to Oshawa. For passengers travelling westbound, the 8:10 p.m. Niagara Falls train out of Union Station will make additional stops at Mimico, Long Branch, Clarkson, Bronte, Appleby, and Aldershot. On Monday, Aug. 2, GO will operate its holiday schedule with the addition of the special Caribana Festival service on Lakeshore east and west. With some one million people expected to attend the festival, GO expects increased ridership.
