On Wednesday, Aug. 18, beginning at 6 p.m., the Summer Bash for Literacy will be held at Boston Pizza Dorval Crossing, just north of the QEW off Dorval Drive. Tickets cost $20, and include buffet dinner and a chance to win door prizes. Guests can also participate in a silent auction and 50/50 draw. Bernie Martenson, president of the Oakville Literacy Council, says the proceeds from the event will benefit the council's free, personalized tutoring program, which she calls "life-changing." "We are unique in what we offer to improve adult literacy in our community," she said. "We treat each student as an individual with different learning needs and goals, and that personalization requires resources. To maintain and build those resources, we always look for new and fun ways to get more funds into our program."
