OAKVILLE - The fate of the old stone warehouse on the site of the Park Sixteen residential commercial complex at Lakeshore Road and Navy Streets is still undecided.
James Snow, president of the Park Sixteen company, said his firm had offered to donate the historic structure to the Oakville Historical Society if the society would undertake to have it removed to another location.
"Barring that, we propose to demolish the building and use some of the material in our new buildings," said Mr. Snow. "We could use the stone for decoration in the lobby."
The building, which faces Water Street, was used for storing grain when Oakville was an important grain-shipping centre. The Historical Society has urged that it be preserved.
Soil boring and preliminary planning for the new multi-million dollar Park Sixteen development is starting immediately, Mr. Snow said. The project was given conditional approval by the Ontario Municipal Board about two weeks ago. Actual construction is not expected to start until the spring of 1969. The complex will include a 20-storey apartment building, a 10-storey hotel and convention centre, a motel and a number of shops and offices.
