Trafalgar Day is being celebrated by the Bronte Historical Society on Sunday, Oct. 17 at the historic Sovereign House. Admiral Horatio Nelson was famous all over the empire and was considered a celebrity in the year 1800. At the time Halton County was being surveyed for pioneer settlement and places in the county were named after the popular hero. Townships in the county were named to hon- our Nelson, who led the British to victory over the French and Spanish during the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The settlement on the mouth of the Twelve Mile Creek was named Bronte, after Nelsons title of Duke of Bronte. The rum cake hints at the rum rations given to British sailors and sometimes referred to as Nelsons blood. The event will also feature Bill Nesbit, with his concertina, who will lead visitors with rous- ing of songs of the sea. The event program runs at 2 p.m. and then again at 3 p.m. The day will also be the last day of an art exhibit by Marguerite Broten and Don Morrison and the last day of the Sovereign House season.
