Here are some best-kept secrets and great reasons to consider using Oakville Transit: Did you know that ... A single fare/ticket can get you there and back. You can stop-over and travel in differ- ent directions on one fare within a two- hour window. You can make a return trip and only need to pay once. GO Transit riders can ride for $0.65 and a GO Transit ticket. The $0.65 and a GO Transit ticket will get you to or from a GO station, including Clarkson GO. A valid GO Transit ticket or pass must be presented to the driver when boarding. A Student Freedom Pass costs just $10 a month. Full-time elementary and high school students can ride Oakville Transit throughout July and August anytime of the day and anywhere Oakville Transit goes for just $10 a month. You can take Oakville Transit to the movies. With the new grid routes in place, you can get to all local movie theatres by bus. All of these routes run seven days a week until approximately 11:30 p.m. except on Sundays when they end at 8 p.m. You can visit Oakvilles lakeside parks by bus. The new Route 2 stops at most of Oakvilles beautiful lakefront properties, including Bronte Harbour, Coronation Park, Oakville Harbour, Lakeside Park and Gairloch Gardens. Route 2 also connects to other bus routes at the Bronte GO Station, Bronte Village, downtown Oakville and the AMC theatre. There are many convenient locations to buy tickets, passes or the new Presto [smart] Card. You can buy tickets and passes at local grocery stores, drug stores and many other locations (see www.oakvilletransit.com/tickets.htm). Presto cards can be purchased at Town Hall, the GO stations, or the Oakville Transit office. It may be a good time to jump on the bus and ride Letters to the editor At www.prestocard.ca you can reload your card, see your transaction activity, and even print a monthly-pass-equivalent statement at the end of the year for income tax purposes. There are many other reasons to give transit a chance, too, including: Reduce Risk: Automobile accidents are the leading cause of death for chil- dren, teenagers and young adults in North America. Reduce Pollution: Transportation emissions are the leading cause of air pollution in Oakville. (A full transit bus can remove up to 40 single occupant vehicles from the road.) Reduce Unemployment: Spending stimulus money on public transportation creates twice as many job-months as highway construction. Reduce Inequity & Taxes: automo- bile users are more heavily subsidized by public funds than transit users. Reduce Stress: Riding transit means no need to watch traffic. Relax, read, plan your day. As noted by Lewis Mumford, "Adding highway lanes to deal with traffic congestion is like loosening your belt to cure obesity." To learn more, visit www.greentrans.org or e-mail info@greentrans.org.
